Lexington PD: Beware Of Leaf Collection Scam

Lexington was warned Tuesday about scammers who were reportedly posing as city leaf collectors.

The notice came from police and Lexington’s Division of Streets and Roads.

It said that at least one person was knocking on doors in council districts 9 and 10, and offering to rake leaves for a fee.

According to the city, the man told homeowners he was working with city leaf collection crews, then asked for money to rake the leaves to the curb.

Division of Streets and Roads deputy director Rob Allen said, "This person is not working for the City and leaf collection personnel do not ask for money… City leaf collection crews are either from the Division of Streets & Roads or the City’s contractor, Republic Services.”

Residents had also reported other problems.

“In some instances, leaves have been put out in areas that have already been serviced by the City. In other cases, leaves have been put in the street instead of in the easements. Leaves raked into the streets can clog storm sewers and cause accidents when they get wet,” said Allen.

Police reminded the community that there was not a charge for city leaf collection in Fayette County.

Anyone with information on the leaf collection scammers was asked to call police at (859) 258-3600.
