Lexington Girl Wants Blankets for Her Birthday
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Afternoons in the Chatting home mean homework, lots of homework for 10-year-old Delaynie.
When she is not at her desk, she is in the garage working on another project.
Delaynie is turning 11 on Thursday, but she is not asking for birthday presents. All she wants are blankets, sleeping bags, gloves, hats, socks, and scarves. She wants to help the homeless. She and her mom watched an ABC 36 story from just a few weeks ago that showed the empty shelves where there are usually blankets at the Catholic Action Center’s store. Delaynie is collecting the items the Center needs.
Once she has enough, she plans on bringing them to Catholic Action Center Director Ginny Ramsey. Ramsey says it is amazing to see such compassion in such a young lady.
“It’s so heartwarming. It gives us hope for our world and hope for this generation,” Ramsey said.
“It’s good to see her heart. That it just keeps growing,” Holly Chatting, Delaynie’s Mom, said tearfully.
That is right. Keeps growing. This is not the first time Delaynie has turned gifts for herself away.
“Even if they’re dirty, it’s better than nothing,” Delaynie said then in an ABC 36 story from three years ago.
She was collecting shoes then instead of Christmas presents. She sent over 600 to Ethiopia and Haiti, but this year she has a new goal for her coats and blankets campaign.
“I want 1000. Not just 600 this year. I want more,” she said.
