Lexington Fire department hosts Brenda Cowan Fire Camp

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Lexington might soon have some new firefighters diversifying the ranks.

The fire department hosted the first annual Brenda Cowan Fire Camp this weekend for girls ages 16-19.

The camp is named after Lt. Brenda Cowan, Lexington’s first black female firefighter who was shot and killed in the line of duty as she responded to a domestic violence call.

At the camp, female firefighters primarily taught the girls.

They’re covering emergency services, rescue, and firefighting while promoting sisterhood and female empowerment.

The two day camp is free and took place at the fire training center on Old Frankfort Pike.
