Lexington event kicks off 24th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Members of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), along with national Association of Letter Carriers are holding a kickoff event Friday to celebrate the begiinnings of the 24th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

The Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger food drive is America’s largest single-day food drive and the UFCW is America’s largest union of food workers. Together, they’ve united to make the 2016 food drive the largest in history and set a new world record for the most amount of food collected on a single day. The “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive holds the Guinness World Record for collecting 77.1 million pounds of food in 2011.

“UFCW members like ours see the effects of hunger in America every day,” said UFCW Local 227 President Bob Blair. “Every time someone has to turn back and put something away in one of our checkout lanes because they don’t have money, we feel for them. This is a small, but important step, to fixing that problem for Lexington’s families.”
