Lexington commemorates the anniversary of D-Day
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Thursday marked the 80th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, a pivotal moment in history now known as D-Day. In honor of this significant anniversary, the city of Lexington paid tribute not only to the event but also to eight fallen Lexington soldiers who bravely served their country.
During a poignant program, Mayor Linda Gorton presented proclamations to the families of the eight fallen soldiers. It was revealed that none of the soldiers had children, so their nieces, nephews, and cousins were found and honored in their place.
US Representative Andy Barr was among those in attendance and shared his sentiments on honoring these soldiers. He expressed, “It’s really special because we lost those brave souls, but their legacy is a gift to all of us. And to future generations of Americans, we live in freedom because of their sacrifice.”
The program also featured a touching video showcasing interviews with Lexington World War II veterans and a documentary titled “In Their Own World,” produced by KET. These tributes serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served during World War II and the enduring legacy they leave behind.
