Lewis Co. inmate dies while being taken to hospital

VANCEBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police say an inmate at the Lewis County Detention Center died while being taken by ambulance to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Troopers say 40-year-old Chris Helphenstine was found unresponsive at about 3:30 a.m. by jail employees.

EMS was called to respond as CPR was administered, but Helphenstine was pronounced dead during the ambulance ride.

Investigators say no foul play is suspected.  An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
