Read the letter that was sent home to parents and guardians below.

Dear Paul Laurence Dunbar High School Families:

The safety and well-being of our students and staff is a top priority for us here at Dunbar, which is why we instituted the STOP tip line this year to provide students with an anonymous way of reporting concerns. Recognizing the importance of open communication between home and school, anytime we deal with a health or safety issue, we want to be sure our families have accurate information directly from us as quickly as possible.

I’m writing today to make you aware of a report we received about an incident that happened after school on Friday, in which a student stood on his vehicle in the school parking lot holding a toy plastic rifle. Although we cannot discuss student disciplinary matters, I want to assure you that appropriate action has been taken to address this situation. We are committed to keeping Paul Laurence Dunbar High School a safe place to learn and work and we have been working closely with the family of the student involved.

This situation provides the perfect opportunity for us to reinforce with our students that safety is never a joke. Please help us to remind our youngsters that situations like this are extremely serious, and can quickly escalate with unintended consequences. You can help us at home by talking with your children and encouraging them to make good choices.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 381-9546. Thank you for the privilege of working with your children and for understanding that we take this matter very seriously.
