Letcher Co. man charged with assault, DUI following head-on crash

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ)- A two vehicle crash on US 23 near the Kentucky and Virginia boarder this morning  caused several injuries and resulted in one drivers arrest, according to Kentucky State Police.

KSP says 51-year-old John Henry Gibson was driving a 2005 Chevrolet passenger car when he noticed a traffic safety detail. Gibson turned around and was driving the wrong way in the south bound lane of US 23. Troopers say Gibson’s car collided head-on with a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado being driving by 59-year-old Tony Kiser.

Investigators say Gibson and his two passengers were injured. Gibson and his wife, Jennifer Gibson, were taken to the hospital. The second passenger, Banner Gibson, was airlifted to Pikeville Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say Kiser refused medical treatment and left the scene with family. There were no passengers in Kiser’s truck.

Troopers say Kiser was charged with assault and DUI. He was lodged at the Letcher County Detention Center.
