Less active Friday forecast but eyes on a strong-to-severe storm threat late Sunday

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Friday! We experienced heavy rain and strong storms across the region late Friday evening, but those storms have now exited to the east. We are tracking areas of dense fog to begin your Friday morning thanks in part to the moisture from the rain that fell on Thursday. There is a Dense Fog Advisory out for central and northern Kentucky through 10 AM. After the fog fades there will some midday sunshine returning. This will help temperatures improve into the low 80s across the region. There will the chance of storms developing late into the afternoon and into the early evening. Most of these storms will be below severe criteria but could still produce some heavy downpours and frequent lightning.

Your Saturday will likely start dry and mostly sunny with isolated-to-widely scattered showers and storms developing during the afternoon and early evening. Most of the daytime will stay dry and some areas may avoid storms all together. If you have any outdoor activities planned, no need to cancel them on Saturday there will be plenty of breaks in the showers and storms.

Now to the severe threat on Sunday. We are expecting at least a round, if not a few rounds, of strong-to-severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon into the evening hours. All “modes” or types of severe weather will be possible. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, and isolated tornadoes will be possible. There is a flash flooding risk as well, mainly overnight Sunday into Monday. This will likely not be a situation where it will be raining all afternoon on Sunday. The daytime activity will be isolated-to-widely scattered strong-to-severe thunderstorms.

This is a conditional risk as well, meaning there could be factors that limit these storms from developing. The more widespread storms will be moving in late night Sunday into Monday. Because this will likely be after sunset, make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts while you are sleeping.

This system begins to finally exit Monday into Tuesday next week. This will drop our temperatures into the low-to-mid 70s and we will lose our strong storm and heavy rain threat. It also looks like the next of the next week will be a nice stretch of weather where we lose the rain chances for a few days.
