Legends invite schools to participate in ‘Hit the Books’

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s time for elementary schools to “Hit the Books” with the Lexington Legends.

Schools are encouraged to register with the Legends to get involved in the Hit the Books reading program for the 2015-16 school year. Students may earn free tickets to a Legends game by participating, and schools are eligible for rewards as well.

To begin the process, educators must register with the Legends by November 20 to ensure their school’s participation in Hit the Books, which is sponsored by Waffle House.  The registration form is available online at www.lexingtonlegends.com.

In addition, the annual bookmark design contest is under way. Entries must be received no later than December 11, 2015. The winning student will have his or her artwork featured on the official 2016 Hit the Books bookmark and poster that are distributed to every student participating in the reading program, which runs through March 31, 2016. About 33,000 students participated during the 2014-15 school year.

“The Hit the Books reading program is one of our favorite community outreach programs,” said Rebecca Barnes, Legends’ director of community relations. “Encouraging children to read and allowing them to be creative in the bookmark design is truly what the program is all about. The Legends are proud to support the importance of reading in the community, and we hope that even more schools will participate this year.”
