Laurel County Sheriff warns residents of phone scam demanding money
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a resurfacing phone scam where callers impersonate law enforcement officers to demand money. According to a release from Sheriff John Root, the scam involves a caller posing as a deputy named Sgt. Johnson, who may be driving a plain Dodge Charger.
Authorities say the scammer targets residents by claiming they owe bond money for legal issues such as a failure to appear in court, missed jury duty, or an outstanding warrant. Victims are pressured to send money to resolve the issue.
The sheriff’s release says this is a scam aimed at stealing money from unsuspecting individuals. Residents are urged not to share personal or financial information and not to send money to these callers.
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says it will never call citizens demanding payment for legal matters over the phone. Officials say they are actively investigating the scam and encourage residents to remain cautious.
