Laurel County Constable indicted for manslaughter
LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – County Constable Bobby Smith appeared in court Monday morning to answer to accusations of killing a Manchester man.
Authorities say the incident began with a routine traffic stop on March 1st. Officials say the driver, 30-year-old Brandon Stanley drove away from the scene, resulting in a warrant issued for his arrest. Three days later Stanley was dead and a constable is being held responsible.
Constable Bobby Smith, 37, was indicted on a second-degree manslaughter charge on Friday.
The Laurel County Sheriff says Smith was attempting to serve a warrant on Stanley at the A&B Quick Stop gas station in East Bernstadt, Kentucky when the shooting happened March 4th.
Stanley suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach and died at the scene, according to the Laurel County Coroner’s office.
Constable Smith was never arrested but had to pay a $50,000 bond.
A preliminary motion hearing is scheduled for April 25th at 9 a.m.
