ESTILL CO., Ky. (WTVQ) – The Estill County Health Department continues to work with the KY Department for Public Health, the local hospital and local healthcare providers regarding the salmonella outbreak.

Health officials are investigating this outbreak to minimize future transmission, stop the spread of disease, and hopefully determine a source or cause.

Currently, there are:

72 people experiencing gastrointestinal illnesses
35 confirmed positive test results for salmonella
>Numerous test results pending
8 hospitalizations

At this time the health department is continuing to contact and collect information from all patrons who have been reported ill as well as those in their party who did not displayed any symptoms.

A major part of reducing the spread of the disease, according to officials, is proper hand washing.  They are reminding everyone to make a special effort to wash hands in these situations:

Right after using the bathroom
Before preparing any food
Before eating any food

If you believe you have experienced symptoms of salmonellosis, consult your healthcare provider.  If you have a question, you may contact your local health department at (606) 723-5181.
