Labor Day Weekend travel surge expected
Travel surge anticipated for Labor Day Weekend, gas prices drop and domestic travel costs fall
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Many Americans are hitting the roads and skies today and tomorrow to kick off their Labor Day Weekend plans. This year, travelers can look forward to some positive developments, despite the anticipated surge in traffic.
According to a report from AAA, domestic travel is set to increase by 9% compared to last year. The travel organization advises motorists to plan their departures carefully to avoid peak traffic times.
“”Friday’s expected to be a busy day, so if you can get on the roadway early that’s probably your best bet,” said Public Affairs Manager at AAA Bluegrass, Lori Weaver Hawkins. “And then Saturday actually the opposite is true, because we know that a lot of people are probably going to be heading Saturday morning, and so it might be better to wait until noon or after,” said Hawkins.
In addition to the increase in travel, drivers will benefit from a decrease in gas prices. AAA reports that gas prices are down 40 cents per gallon compared to last year, providing some financial relief for those embarking on their trips.
“But gas prices have been trending downward, right now we’re looking at about $3.10 on average for Kentucky,” said Hawkins.
While more drivers are expected on the roads, safety remains a priority. Last year, Kentucky experienced over 1,800 traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Officials are urging drivers to remain cautious and adhere to safety guidelines.
“We don’t want anyone driving impaired or distracted, and certainly follow all those traffic laws out there, don’t be running traffic signals speeding, those sorts of things,” said Hawkins.
AAA also indicates that domestic travel expenses have decreased by approximately 2 % this year across the country, further adding to the good news for travelers.
