KY volunteer firefighter critically injured in crash in Colorado

WACO, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Waco Volunteer Fire Department says one of its former firefighters is fighting for his life in Colorado.

Erik Haslem worked with the Waco Volunteer Fire Department while studying at Eastern Kentucky University, according to the department.

Haslem was riding a motorcycle April 25 in Lakewood, Colo., when he collided with a Jeep, according to his family.

The family says he was wearing a helmet.

Haslem suffered brain trauma and a severed spinal cord.

“In this situation, progress is unpredictable and outcomes are uncertain. We hope for small victories but complications are expected. Erik’s doctors emphasize that this is a marathon, not a sprint. We are moving hour by hour,” the family said in a message posted on the Waco Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page.
