Ky. Senate Republicans to elect leaders on Tuesday

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Republican majority in the state Senate will choose its leaders for the upcoming legislative session during a closed-door meeting on Tuesday.

Republicans are expected to nominate Sen. David Givens of Greensburg as president pro tem to replace retiring Sen. Katie Stine. Majority Caucus Leader Dan Seum and Majority Whip Brandon Smith could face challenges for their leadership posts. But Republicans are expected to re-nominate Sen. Robert Stivers for another term as Senate President and re-elect Sen. Damon Thayer as Senate majority floor leader.

The Senate President and President Pro Tem must be voted on by the full Senate. But Republicans will control 25 of the 38 Senate seats, all but ensuring their nominee will win.

Democrats have not decided who will lead their caucus. Former Minority Floor Leader R.J. Palmer lost to Republican Ralph Alvarado earlier this month.
