Man once pardoned by Former Gov. Matt Bevin appears in court on assault charge

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A man previously pardoned by former Governor Matt Bevin appeared in Fayette County District Court on new assault charges.

Kurt Smith appeared infront of Judge Denotra Spruill Gunther, who entered a not guilty plea for Smith.

Smith is due back in court on August 28th at 8:30 a.m.

His cash bond remains at $25,000.

According to Lexington Police, Smith was arrested on Thursday in connection to an attack on a woman last week at a home on Georgetown Street, in which the woman had to be hospitalized.

As previously reported on ABC36 News Now, Smith was also arrested in 2020 on charges of strangulation and assault. His criminal history dates back to 2001, when, at 17 years old, he was arrested and later sentenced to life in prison for killing his six-week-old baby. Smith was also reportedly involved in a prison riot.

Former Governor Matt Bevin pardoned Smith on December 6, 2019, in one of several controversial last-minute pardons issued before leaving office.
