VIRGIE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky State Police have released the name of the man shot and killed by officers in Pike County this week.

Troopers say they shot 37-year-old Jonathan Bentley, of Jonancy, KY, because he was driving directly toward first responders who were at the scene of a fatal crash in Pike County on Tuesday morning. They say Bentley died at the scene.

KSP says the initial fatal crash happened around 4:00 a.m. on KY Route 805. Troopers say 49-year-old Quentin Bentley, of Virginia, was found dead at the scene. They say another person, from the second vehicle, was taken to the Pikeville Medical Center.

Troopers say they were still at the scene around 9:30 a.m. when they were told by the Elkhorn Police Department that officers were in pursuit of a vehicle that Bentley was driving and that he had turned onto KY Route 805.

Troopers say the vehicle approached the scene of the fatal accident and was driving toward first responders. Troopers say the Bentley refused to stop and so they fired at the vehicle.
