KSP: Knox elementary students brought pistols to school

FLAT LICK, Ky. (WTVQ) – An elementary school in Knox County was placed on lock down Thursday after state police say two brothers brought pistols to school.

According to troopers, it happened at Dewitt Elementary School in Flat Lick. State police say the children, ages 6 and 7, showed the guns to another student on the bus ride to school. Investigators say that student told a teacher as soon as the bus arrived. Frank Shelton, of Knox County Schools, says the guns were immediately taken from the children.  State police say one of the guns was loaded, the other was not.

Shelton says it’s believed that the students brought the weapons from home, and that they thought the pistols were toy guns.  Police are still trying to figure out how the children were able to access the guns. According to investigators, both students will be charged with possession of a deadly weapon on school property.
