Kentucky senator Phillip Wheeler apologizes for using racial slur
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A Kentucky senator is apologizing after democrats say there are several posts in which he uses a racial slur.
One post uses the word “coon” in reference to Virginia”s Democratic Governor, Ralph Northam.
Friday, Republican Senator Phillip Wheeler posted his apology on Facebook saying the word “coon” is a “nickname” Virginia’s governor has apparently used.
Wheeler also says he used the word to call attention to Northam’s racism.
State Representative Attica Scott, D – Louisville, says it is unnecessary and hurtful to use that kind of language at all.
“Of course I’m upset, but I’m also hurt because I have to walk these halls as the only black woman here and to know there’s a state senator who’s using that kind of language that is directed at people like me is hurtful,” Scott says.
