Kentucky jewelry stores give back to Make A Wish
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — Kendra Scott jewelry stores in Kentucky are giving back to Make A Wish on Saturday.
Here in Lexington, a Georgetown native got the chance to help the store raise some needed funding on World Kindness Day.
Karys Durham went through years of pain before finding out what was wrong with her.
“So I had chronic pancreatitis my whole life, we didn’t catch it until age 15, so once they caught it I had a surgery,” said Karys Durham. “I had my pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, appendix and small intestines all removed. So it was a 16 and a half hour surgery, it was in Minnesota.”
That surgery gave her more than just a cure for her disease, but also a wish through the make a wish foundation.
Karys says she was shocked, because she thought that was just for kids who were really sick, but was told it’s for kids that have gone through a lot of medical trauma.
“We decided to go to the virgin islands because I wanted to do something the whole family could enjoy,” said Karys. “It wasn’t just for me, because going through a chronic illness it’s not just something that just effected me it was my whole family as well.”
Kendra scot has partnered with make a wish for years. For the event Karys was able to design a necklace with her favorite color, pink.
Her mother Tina is grateful for all of the work of Kendra Scott.
“It’s a huge blessing to be able to be here and hopefully be able to give back decent portion of their sales today,” said Tina. “We’re very very appreciative to Kendra Scott for doing so.”
20 percent of all sales at the event went back to Make A Wish.
Karys says she loves getting to come to these kind of events.
“I kind of made it my purpose after getting diagnosed, I wanted to help other kids who were going through other situations and kind of show them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. If I can get through it you can get through it.”
And getting to see how much her daughter loves giving back and who she has become is more than her mother could ask for.
“It’s good it’s good. Just to see the joy that she has. She just got back from homecoming at western this past weekend and went to visit with her friends and that kind of stuff. So, just knowing that she’s having those milestones she should have, it’s just such a blessing, we’re so grateful.”
