Kentucky Derby Theme Reinforces Goals In The New School Year

As 41,000 children in Fayette County went out the door for their first day of school, kids at Julius Marks Elementary were greeted by teachers in Kentucky Derby dress.

Lynn Poe, the school’s principal, said the idea stems from the Kentucky Department of Education whose theme this year is "unbridled learning."

She said she wants to set the bar high for educational standards starting Wednesday.

She said the school is reinforcing "rise to the top."

Keeneland’s Buckles mascot visited each classroom as well.

Keeneland is a community partner with Fayette County Public Schools.

Fifth graders from across the district will take a field trip to Keeneland on August 28.
