Kentucky Air National Guard deploying Airmen to Puerto Rico

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Thirty-two members of the Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Contingency Response Group are expected to depart the Kentucky Air National Guard Base here Saturday, Sept. 23, in support of Hurricane Maria recovery operations.

The Airmen are deploying to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they will establish an Intermediate Staging Base to receive cargo and humanitarian aid by airlift, and stage it for forward distribution as needed. They will join a team of eight Kentucky Air Guardsmen, who are already en route to Puerto Rico to assess the airfield and prepare it for the arrival of the main body of Airmen.

The Kentucky Air Guard previously deployed seven Airmen from the 123rd Special Tactics Squadron to the U.S. Virgin Islands on Wednesday, where they are assisting with relief operations on St. Croix and St. Thomas.  On Friday, the Kentucky Air Guard’s 165th Airlift Squadron deployed three C-130 aircraft and 21 Airmen to the Caribbean to fly airlift missions throughout the region.
