Keeping Your Pets Warm

If you think it’s too cold to spend time outside in this frigid weather, than it is too cold for your pets to be outside.

Ashley Hammond with the Lexington Humane Society said, "They do have fur but that doesn’t mean they should be outside at all times, especially in this cold."

For families who have no choice but to leave a pet outside, Hammond said to give them a draft-free doghouse with organic bedding, water in a bowl that prevents it from freezing, and extra food.

The extra food gives them extra energy to help keep themselves warm.

In this extremely cold weather, Hammond said to limit time on walks and at the dog park.

Hammond said sweaters and sweatshirts made for pets can actually help them stay warm.

The cold weather isn’t the only winter hazard for pets.

Any antifreeze that is spilled should be cleaned up right away. Pets like its sweet taste, but it is hazardous to them.
