Keeneland hosts “Heroes Day’
Lexington, Ky. (WTVQ) — On Sunday, Keeneland hosted it’s annual Heroes Day.
The event has been going on for over a decade and honors service members, first responders and healthcare workers.
“It’s just an easy way for Keeneland to say thank you to all of those heroes living here in our community,” said Senior Director of Operations Kara Heissenbuttel.
Service members, first responders, health care workers and their families were able to go out to Keeneland and enjoy a day at the races free of charge.
“We’re so grateful for their sacrifices, not only for the hero but for their entire family,” said Heissenbuttel. “To be able to host them and treat them to a day at the races where they’re just here to be a special guest it means so much to us.”
Members of the Kentucky National Guard also helping with activities.
“I love seeing all the families and them getting to talk,” said Chip St. Charles with the Kentucky National Guard. “The kids are having a blast. It’s a great opportunity to come out here and not only recognize them, but give them some tools they can use moving forward.”
One tradition of Heroes Day, the Henry Clay High School JROTC taking the field to reveal the American flag.
With beautiful sunshine and warm weather, it was a perfect day to honor not only those present and serving, but also those that are missing or have passed away.
“We actually employ a lot of veterans here at Keeneland and it’s something they’re all very proud of to participate in as well,” said Heissenbuttel.
Thousands of ‘heroes’ and their families came out to Keeneland for the event.
