Keavy woman says she witnessed wife set her husband on fire

KEAVY, Ky. (WTVQ)- It is like something out of a movie. A laurel county woman is behind bars, accused of setting her husband on fire. An arrest citation says 40-year-old Vera Wooten saw her husband in a car with another woman before lighting him up, but someone who claims to be that “other woman” says Wooten had no reason to be so angry.

“It was just, it was the awfulest thing I’ve ever seen,” she said.

She says the Wootens had talked about buying some furniture from her family so she went to show the husband, whom she calls John, some photos, but her phone was dying so they sat in the car where it could charge.

That is when the neighbor says Vera Wooten drove up in a fury.

“She started punching him, punching him repeatedly, drug him out of the car and kept punching him, came around to my side of the car and told me, again, she was gonna kill me and I better get out of there,” she said.

So she says she did drive away, turning to look in her rear view mirror, when she saw John go up in flames. She says she then made a frantic 911 call.

“All I could keep saying was, ‘He’s on fire. He’s on fire. She set him on fire,'” she said.

It is like something out of a soap opera.

Neighbor Jody Hensley says there is hardly ever any drama on Woodland Court in Keavy.

The Sheriff’s Office says after the fire, Wooten drove her husband to the hospital where he was later airlifted to a special burn unit in Cincinnati. His neighbor says she thinks Vera Wooten assumed her husband was cheating, but she says that is not at all the case.

“I’m not the other woman. I’ve never even shook the man’s hand,” she said.

The sheriff says that man is now fighting for his life with burns covering 50% of his body.

Several neighbors in the community say they are upset Wooten is not facing a more serious charge. She faces assault, but they would like to see her charged with attempted murder. WTVQ requested an interview with Wooten, but jail officials say she declined.
