Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy shot during pursuit

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) –  A pursuit between law enforcement and a suspect led to an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night.

According to Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor, deputies and Kentucky State Police Troopers responded to a domestic call around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 17. The incident escalated to a pursuit that stopped just inside the Lawrence County line on state Route 201.

The suspect, Paul Tipton, fired gunshots and hit Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Hutchinson in the forehead.

Many agencies came together to expedite getting Deputy Hutchinson to receive medical attention. Paintsville EMS, Prestonsburg City Police Department, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Pikeville Police Department, KSP and numerous fire departments helped with the transport.

Deputy Hutchinson was taken to Pikeville Medical Center to be treated. He was released from the hospital Wednesday morning and is said to be doing well.

Tipton was also shot several times and taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa to be treated, then transferred to Pikeville Medical Center.  KSP says Tipton’s in stable condition.

State Route 201 was closed as KSP investigated the incident. The route is now reopened.
