Jefferson principal receives Milken award, $25,000 prize

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Jefferson County elementary school principal has been given a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, which carries a $25,000 prize.

State and local education officials and a representative of the Milken Education Awards surprised Allyson Vitato Thursday at Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary School.

Vitato has been principal of the school since 2010. The Kentucky Department of Education says while Vitato has been principal, the number of students scoring proficient or better on state assessments has grown, with documented gains in every subject and at every grade level.

The Milken award program was established in 1985, with the first award given in 1987. Kentucky has had 54 educators receive the award since the state first began participating in 1993.
