Inside The Blue Grass Army Depot
"We’re on track here. It’s been a long haul, but we’re getting closer every day. And as you can see from the facility itself, it’s quite an undertaking," said Craig Williams, co-chair for the Chemical Destruction Community Advisory Board.
Inside the building, the walls themselves are two-feet thick. On the walls: a chemical-resistant coating.
Blue Grass Army Depot reps said the facility is 70 percent completed, and construction is scheduled to finish in 2015.
After that, system checks will be done throughout, and aren’t scheduled to be done until 2018.
That’s when reps said the facility is scheduled to be operational.
U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) got an in-person look at how the plant has progressed since his last visit in 2009.
"I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to continue to do that and move toward the ultimate destruction of these weapons," he said.
