Illinois man charged after shooting victim’s body found in Kentucky

COLUMBUS, Ky. (WTVQ) – An Illinois man who had been missing for two weeks was found shot to death down an embankment near Columbus, Kentucky on Thursday night, according to Kentucky State Police.

Illinois State Police contacted KSP on July 26, regarding 38-year old Zachary Campbell, of Burnside, Illinois, who was reported missing July 15, 2021.

Investigators say they learned Campbell’s body had been dumped somewhere off the Trail of Tears route.  Campbell’s body was eventually found in Hickman County after multiple search attempts.

An autopsy was performed Friday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Madisonville.  KSP says the preliminary results show Campbell died of a gunshot wound.

Investigators say Tyler Childers shot Campbell and dumped his body in Kentucky.

State Police say Childers is in the Massac County Jail in Illinois on multiple charges.  An arrest warrant has been obtained for Childers on the charge of Murder in Kentucky, according to KSP.

KSP Detective Brian Hill is leading the investigation in Kentucky.
