Hunger Action Month brings innovative ways to help food banks
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ/Press Release) – Every September God’s Pantry Food Bank along with Feeding America and the network of food banks around the nation stand together to fight hunger.
The month is known as Hunger Action Month, and it’s a month to spread the word, take action, and dedicate ourselves to finding a solution to this hunger crisis.
This year with COVID-19, Hunger Action Month activities will look a little different, but the goal stays the same — “Ending Hunger One Helping at a Time.”
Thanks to Hunger Action Month sponsor, the LG&E and KU Foundation, the agency has created a few new ways to fight hunger and take action this month:
More Than Just a Meal: Sadly, we were not able to have Taste of the Bluegrass 2020, and we know that event would be nothing without the fabulous food and beverage makers who provide their sweet and savory offerings year after year. This September we are introducing More Than Just a Meal, sponsored by Traditional Bank – a way to fight hunger and support the business partners that make Taste of the Bluegrass so special. More Than Just a Meal tickets can be purchased for $100 through God’s Pantry Food Bank, and the purchaser will receive five discount coupons for $10 off each order of $20 or more at any of the 24 participating food and beverage partners. The coupons are valid from September 1-30, 2020. The Food Bank is making sure our partners receive 100% of the cost of your purchase by reimbursing them for every $10 coupon they collect. The ticket purchase also includes a $50 tax deductible donation to God’s Pantry Food Bank (400 MEALS!) and an automatic entry to win prizes to next year’s Taste of the Bluegrass!
Virtual Food Drive: COVID-19 has changed how we distribute food because keeping everyone safe is our top priority. However, we also saw, and still see, an increase in need for food assistance. Instead of a traditional food drive, we are kicking off a virtual food drive! Donors will be able to “shop” from the comfort and safety of their home for some of the staple items found in the pantry and food boxes on our virtual food drive website. Those funds will allow us to purchase the food needed to continue to serve those across Central and Eastern Kentucky who experience hunger on a daily basis. As we commemorate the 65th Anniversary of God’s Pantry Food Bank, we hope you will help us reach our goal of raising $65,000 for the Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive.
Virtual Tour of the Four Warehouse Locations: In September we usually open our warehouses for tours, offering an inside look of how a food bank works. Instead this year, we invite you to our virtual warehouse tours! Every Friday beginning on September 4, we will release a virtual tour of one of our warehouses (Fayette County, Laurel County, Rowan County and Floyd County). In these 3D virtual tours, the viewer will be able to walk through the warehouse and learn more about the operations of God’s Pantry Food Bank.
