Humane Society: Fewer feral cats in Franklin County

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Franklin County Humane Society is recognizing National Feral Cat Day (NFCD) on October 16 to bring attention to the efforts that reduce the unnecessary killing of cats in the United States.

Volunteers spent the day educating the community about the trap-neauter-return (TNR) program.

In the program, strays are picked up, spayed or neutered and vaccinated then returned to where they were found.

Volunteers say about 1,200 cats have been spayed or neutered in the past three years since the program started in Franklin County. Without this intervention, they believe thousands of additional feral cats would have been born.

43 cats are fixed on average each month. Volunteers hope this will stabilize and eventually reduce the feral cat population.

As part of this year’s local observance, hand-crafted feeding bowls in honor of Lionel, “Cat in Residence” at New Leash on Life Thrift & Architectural Salvage, will be available for a $15 donation while supplies last. Bowls will be available at New Leash on Life Thrift & Architectural Salvage and Broadway Clay in conjunction with National Feral Cat Day on Friday and Saturday, October 16-17, 2015. Franklin County Humane Society volunteer Sharon Parrish designed and made the bowls.

All proceeds will support the Franklin County Humane Society’s TNR Program to reduce the overpopulation of feral and stray cats in Frankfort and Franklin County.
