How popular is ‘Pappy Van Winkle’ bourbon?

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – How popular is Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon? It’s popular enough to have people camping out to make sure they get a bottle.  ABC36 found campers in Lexington at the Richmond Road and Man O’ War Boulevard Liquor Barns.  People have lined up since last night to get their ‘pappy’.

A limited amount of the rare bourbon goes on sale Friday. Pappy is always in demand worldwide, but it has been an especially hot commodity since the "bourbon heist" in Franklin County back in 2013. Authorities say, 65 cases of the 20-year-aged bourbon mysteriously disappeared. It’s estimated worth is $26,000 and the case has yet to be solved.

To give you an idea on how rare the bottles are, pappy’s 23-year-aged bourbon is going for more than $250, according to one Liquor barn location.

Some the campers told ABC36 that they plan to keep the bottle as a collectible, while others said they would possibly resell the bourbon.  Jonathan Kromer was a first time camper and said he plans to enjoy his purchase.
