Hot and very humid forecast through the weekend
Pop-up storms may provide some brief relief from the hot and humid through the weekend
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – It’s a muggy start across central and eastern Kentucky this Friday morning, and it’s a sign of things to come as we lock into a hot and steamy stretch that’ll last through much of next week.
Temperatures will soar back into the low 90s this afternoon, and while the humidity won’t be quite as oppressive as it will be in the days ahead, you’ll definitely feel the stickiness. Factoring in that humidity, heat index values will climb close to 100° for many, and even higher for some spots west and north of Lexington. That’s where a Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 PM—heat indices could reach up to 105° in those areas, so please take it easy if you’re spending time outdoors.
As we head into the afternoon, a few isolated pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible. These will be hit-or-miss and not widespread, but where they do form, they could provide brief relief from the heat. No severe weather is expected, but with weak steering flow in place, any storm that pops up may linger over one spot for a while—something to keep in mind if you’re out and about.
Weekend Preview:
The weekend won’t bring much change. Saturday and Sunday will stay hot and humid, with highs again in the low 90s and heat index values creeping into the upper 90s. We’ll have scattered summertime storms each afternoon—neither day will be a washout, but a few storms could contain locally heavy downpours, which may lead to isolated issues with flash flooding, especially in low-lying or poor drainage areas.
Looking Ahead:
The heat really cranks up next week. We’re looking at mid-90s for highs Monday through Wednesday, with dew points in the 70s making it feel like 100–105° at times. That puts us on the edge of more Heat Advisories as we close out July.
Some good news: relief is on the way by Thursday or Friday, as a weak front slides through and brings lower humidity and slightly cooler temps just in time to flip the calendar to August.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and make sure you’re checking back with the ABC 36 Storm Team throughout the weekend for any updates on the heat or pop-up storm chances.
