Hot and humid stretch continues, relief in sight late week
A Heat Advisory is in effect through Wednesday evening.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – It’s another steamy start across central and eastern Kentucky as our stretch of hot and humid weather marches on. Morning temperatures began in the low-to-mid 70s, with dew points already climbing into the oppressive range. Unfortunately, things won’t be letting up anytime soon.
Afternoon highs today will once again reach the low 90s, but when you factor in the high humidity, heat index values will push into the low 100s, making for another uncomfortable day. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday for much of the region, including the Lexington area. Be sure to take it easy if you’re spending time outdoors—stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
A few pop-up showers and storms may develop this afternoon and evening, but they’ll be isolated in nature and not long-lasting. In fact, for the lucky few, a quick downpour might actually provide some brief relief from the heat. Storm chances dwindle overnight, with muggy conditions lingering and lows only dropping into the low-to-mid 70s.
Looking Ahead
Tuesday and Wednesday will be the hottest days of this stretch, with high temperatures climbing into the mid-90s and afternoon heat indices reaching or exceeding 105° in many areas. Rain chances remain low, though we’ll still be watching for a few isolated storms during the heat of the afternoon.
By late Wednesday into Thursday, a cold front begins to approach from the north. This will bring increasing rain and storm chances, with some heavy rainfall and perhaps a few stronger storms possible, especially Thursday afternoon and evening. This front is also our ticket to relief from the oppressive humidity and dangerous heat.
Behind the front, temperatures will drop significantly. Friday will already feel more comfortable, but Saturday brings a true taste of late-summer refreshment. Morning lows could dip into the upper 50s in the valleys, with highs struggling to reach the low 80s. Dew points will finally fall into the 50s and 60s, giving us a much more comfortable air mass heading into the weekend.
