Historic Lexington church being demolished

A historic church in Lexington is being demolished but church leaders say it is for good reason.

St. Peter Claver Church is considered the first African American Catholic Church in Lexington. It was dedicated in 1948.

Church leaders say the old building was falling apart and the congregation outgrew it.

The old building is being torn down to make way for a new one. Demolition started Monday and is expected to last only a few days.

The new sanctuary will hold twice as many people and will be connected to the new education center, where services are being held during construction.

The church hopes construction on the new building will start this spring.
