Highway in western Kentucky closed due to flooding

WICKLIFFE, Ky. (AP) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has closed U.S. 51 at two locations in western Kentucky in response to rising floodwaters.

The cabinet said the Ohio River was rising more quickly than anticipated and so both the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge and U.S. 51 south of Wickliffe near the Ballard-Carlisle county line closed early Thursday.

Spokesman Keith Todd of District 1 said Highway Department workers placed semi-permanent barricades on the roadway to keep them from being moved. Closure at the two sites is expected to last at least a week.

Todd says the bridge is typically used by about 5,000 vehicles each day.
