Hickman storm downs power lines, utility poles, closes roads

HICKMAN, Ky. (AP) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said most state highways remain closed in the western Kentucky city of Hickman, where a severe storm brought down power lines and utility poles.

National Weather Service meteorologist Robin Smith in Paducah said the agency has a crew in the area to determine whether a tornado was responsible for the damage Thursday night. Smith said the storm caused damage in Bernie and Puxico in Missouri east to near Murray, Kentucky.

The Fulton County Detention Center sustained roof damage in the storm. The Kentucky Department of Corrections said in a statement Friday that the jail reported that 80 inmates were temporarily relocated to neighboring correctional facilities. No injuries were reported.

Transportation spokesman Keith Todd said it may be early Saturday before all Hickman roads have reopened.
