Heirlooms and Gretchen’s – Hometown Tours
Heirlooms & Gretchen’s began around 1986 as two separate businesses, Heirlooms Stained Glass and Gretchen’s Lamps & Miniatures. In 2002, they combined and became Heirlooms & Gretchen’s. Liz Cox and Gretchen Soards were the original owners, but Liz left the business in 2002 and passed away in 2004. Kim Hooks joined Gretchen five years ago as a partner, and is now managing the business.
Located in beautiful, historic downtown Georgetown, Heirlooms & Gretchen’s is a treasure trove. They sell, repair, and restore both antique and new lamps. They also replace and restore shades, specializing in stained glass lamp shades. For those who prefer the DIY approach, you can find almost any part you might need to revamp or repair lamps. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, just ask, and Heirlooms & Gretchen’s will find it for you.
But they have so much more than lamps! Heirlooms & Gretchen’s also sells doll houses and miniatures, small antiques, collectibles, vintage costume and estate jewelry, and stained glass items. For those who craft or want to craft with stained-glass, they offer stained glass supplies as well as workshops.
Though workshops are for adults only, due to the nature of working with the glass and the equipment, they teach both beginner and advanced levels. Beginners, over the course of 4, two-hour classes, learn techniques required to complete a substantial stained glass project using the copper foil method. There are a variety of patterns students can choose from. Advanced students build on the techniques learned in the beginner class. Pre-registration is required since the classes are small, around 4-5 students. Best of all, with advanced notice, they can customize classes for organizations, clubs, homemakers, and companies. Classes take place on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
They also offer classes for beginner through advanced in making stepping stones, boxes, hot glass (fusing and slumping), and decorative soldering.
You can visit Heirlooms & Gretchen’s at 136 West Main Street, Georgetown, KY 40324 or call (502) 863-2538.
Heirlooms & Gretchen’s is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
