Hazy sunshine as temperatures finally warm up

Afternoon highs will return to the upper 70s near 80 after a chilly Monday morning

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – After a cool and crisp start to your Monday morning, with many spots dipping into the low and mid-40s, we’ll rebound nicely under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures this afternoon will climb into the upper 70s to near 80°, giving us a beautiful start to the first week of June across central and eastern Kentucky.

However, if you notice the sky looking a bit more “milky” or white than usual, you’re not imagining things. That’s thanks to upper-level wildfire smoke filtering in from Canada. While this won’t affect much of our air quality at the surface, it will continue to create that hazy look in the sky and could lead to more muted sunrises and sunsets over the next couple of days.

Warming Trend Continues

We’ll feel more summer-like Tuesday into Wednesday as high pressure drifts east and southerly winds usher in warmer and more humid air. Highs will push well into the mid-80s by Tuesday afternoon, and with dew points creeping up, it’ll start to feel a bit muggy too — especially by Wednesday.

The good news? Dry conditions hold through at least Wednesday afternoon. Many communities across the region are enjoying a much-needed dry stretch after a rather soggy May. If you’ve got outdoor plans midweek, especially in central and eastern Kentucky, you’re in the clear for now.

Rain Returns Late Week

Our next weather maker arrives late Wednesday night into Thursday. A stalled front to our northwest will finally begin to shift south and east, bringing scattered showers and storms back into the picture by Thursday morning. While the severe threat remains low for now, we’ll need to watch how things evolve heading into Friday, when another wave of energy moves in and could enhance storm chances a bit more.

The active pattern looks to hang around into next weekend, with off-and-on chances for rain through Sunday and perhaps into early next week.
