Harlan County store that cashed checks for Blackjewel miners asking for money back
HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Blackjewel bankruptcy isn’t just hurting miners, it’s also impacted those who do business with the miners.
Don’s Super Saver in Harlan County cashed paychecks for many of the Blackjewel miners.
When the company went bankrupt, the store expected the bank to repay the store for the checks it cashed for the miners.
The owners of Don’s Super Saver says that didn’t happen and they sent a letter to Blackjewel miners, asking them for repayment.
After being contacted by miners who took the letter to mean the store was going after them or possibly pressing charges, the store put up a post on its Facebook page to clear up the confusion.
The store says it just wants miners who cashed their checks there to repay the store when they receive a replacement check from Blackjewel.
If not repaid, the store says it will be out $91,000.
According to the store, it did file a claim but says it’s unlikely to get any money from the bankruptcy court.
