Group holds 2nd impeachment rally in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — A rally happened Monday morning outside of Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell’s Lexington office.

The protesters say it’s to send a message to McConnell to have a fair Senate trial for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

This was the second rally held here by MoveOn.

“I just think it’s critically important that Mitch gets some pressure from his constituents to do the right thing and to fulfill his oath to the constitution. This isn’t about right vs left this is about right vs wrong,” says Aaron Viles, “Save our Democracy” organizer.

Viles says the right thing is for McConnell to give a fair impeachment trial with witnesses.

“He’ll take a new oath when they start the Senate trial and that oath will be to administer impartial justice,” says Viles.

He says how can he have impartial justice when McConnell has said he would have complete coordination with the White House.

“If you have a jury trial the defense attorney does not coordinate with the accused. You just don’t do it, that’s just not a trial,” says protester Chuck Eddy.

Eddy is a moderate Republican and he says it’s about supporting your country not your party.

“What Trump is doing by refusing to allow anybody to come over and testify, by refusing any of those documents, is trying to set himself above the law and like this sign says ‘Trump is not above the law’, says Eddy.

Eddy and Viles say what the president did, using foreign government policies to influence the 2020 election, should have him removed from office.

“This is an attack on our constitution is how I look at it. If he’s not removed from office, if this kind of activity is allowed to continue, basically we’re kissing our constitutional republic, we’re kissing our democracy goodbye,” says Eddy.
