Grand jury indicts former UK basketball director on fraud charges

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A former director of UK Men’s Basketball is accused of defrauding athletes of more than one million dollars.

Yahoo Sports reports a federal grand jury indicted 44-year-old Leon Smith on felony charges of identity theft, money laundering, and defrauding clients.

The indictment says Smith stole 1.3 million dollars from professional athletes who used his companies for various financial services.

Two of his alleged victims were former Kentucky players Josh Harrellson and Darius Miller.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Harrellson claims in a Fayette County civil lawsuit that Smith defrauded him of about $180,000 dollars.

Smith is due in court May 15th.
