GoFundMe page set up for well-known designated driver in need of surgery

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man who has safely driven over 500,000 people home now needs help from the community as he faces a costly surgery.

Steve “Radar” Rader, also known as “Stebo,” has been helping people get home for 15 years.  The driving force behind Kentucky Against Drunk Driving, Rader also suffers from hydrocephalus – a swelling of the brain due to excessive cerebral-spinal fluid.  He received a cerebral shunt to alleviate the pressure back in high school, but last week, the shunt malfunctioned.

Organizers of a GoFundMe page say the malfunction caused Rader to pass out in his van, where he wasn’t found for four days.  Now, he will have to have surgery to replace the shunt.

The GoFundMe account has set a goal of raising $100,000 to cover medical expenses, along with a loss of work while Rader recovers.

Currently, the account stands at just under $20,000 dollars.

Anyone who has been safely driven home, or who’s lives have been affected by drunk driving are urged to donate whatever they can.
