Update: July 11 at 3:30 p.m.

Family and friends have organized a GoFundMe for the 18-year-old Lexington man who died due to an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound on the morning of July 4.

Family friends have identified the man as Tyler Smith, a recent Lafayette Senior High School graduate and “an extraordinary young man.”

“No matter where he was, Tyler had a way of making people feel welcome. He was a hardworking young man with a bright future, having just graduated from Lafayette High School. This was supposed to be the summer he celebrated with friends before beginning the next chapter of his life and chasing his dreams,” the organizer of the GoFundMe, Wade Larson, wrote.

As of July 11 at 3:30 p.m., the GoFundMe has raised $18,000 of its $20,000 goal. A goal, Larson said, would be directed toward covering funeral expenses for the teen.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Tyler, we hope our community can come together to lift at least one burden from his mother’s shoulders during the difficult days ahead,” the GoFundMe said.
