God’s Pantry hands out thousands of Thanksgiving meals to those in need

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- This year is the 25th year of God’s Pantry Food Bank’s Thanksgiving distribution program and for the first time people outside of Fayette County can participate.

With just a few days until Thanksgiving, hundreds of volunteers came together at Southland Christian Church to give away Thanksgiving meals to families like Paula Davis’.

“It’s for my mom and the family,” said Davis.

Davis says her mother is older and on a fixed income so being able to get a free Thanksgiving meal to feed her family is a blessing.

“She was ecstatic about coming here. She was so proud and happy about it she told another person about it and they were able to come and participate in this,” said Davis.

It’s that pride and word of mouth that prompted God’s Pantry executives to expand the program outside of Fayette County for the first time in it’s 25 year history.

“In Floyd County, in Laurel County and in Rowan County. For us to be able to expand this program to help more people in need is just part of what we always strive to do,” said Michael Halligan, CEO of God’s Pantry Food Bank.

This kind of help is something Davis says she not only appreciates receiving but has also now inspired her to come back next year to help others just like her mother.

“As far as volunteering here, I would love to do something like that. I think it’s such a blessing that people still have a heart to give,” said Davis.
