Get to know the main democrats vying for the 6th district
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Kentucky’s primary is about a month away. Wednesday night Democrats running for congress will debate at Transylvania University in Lexington.
The winner of the primary will face republican Andy Barr.
There are three main candidates in this competitive democratic primary. The current mayor of Lexington, a current state senator and a former marine fighter pilot, all of whom have made this congressional race nationally known, but what do these candidates actually stand for and what separates them from each other?
Jim Gray, Reggie Thomas, and Amy McGrath are the top three candidates for the democratic nomination for the 6th district. All are well known in the state.
Gray, the current mayor of Lexington is running on a platform of bringing what he’s done for the city to congress.
“In fact, we were named the fifth best run city in the country just last year and so taking these lessons learned and representing our full district is what I intend to do in congress,” Mayor Gray said.
Senator Thomas says he’s running to represent the people of Kentucky, which he says Representative Andy Barr is not doing.
“What we have here in Andy Barr is someone who is beholden to special interests, to the big banks in New York and we deserve better here in central Kentucky. We deserve someone who is going to represent us,” Sen. Thomas said.
Finally, Amy McGrath, a former marine, says she’s running because she wants to be a part of a new generation of leaders.
“We need people who didn’t grow up necessarily within one political party or another, that look at things like congress as a service,” McGrath said.
When it comes to the issues, the candidates don’t vary much. All are focused on helping the middle class, making healthcare affordable, and improving education, but all three say it’s their background that separates them from the pack.
“I learned in a family business that you’ve got to work together, you’ve got to cross party lines whether it’s in government or whether it’s in any initiative,” Gray said.
“I think the fact that, one because of my legislative experience, I have shown a willingness to listen to people,” Thomas said.
“This is a federal office, so who has the experience in international affairs, in national affairs, in federal affairs and that’s also what I bring to the table,” McGrath said.
The primary election is May 22nd but the deadline to register to vote for the primary is April 23rd so if you want to have a voice in this race make sure to register before then.
