Georgetown Police warn people to be cautious of solicitors

Georgetown, Ky. (WTVQ) –With the holiday season approaching, Georgetown Police are reminding citizens to take extra precautions when strangers come and knock on your door.

“We’re just using our Facebook as a public safety announcement, informational platform, to keep our citizens aware of things that might happen over the holiday season,” said Assistant Chief Josh Nash. “We do see an increase of thefts and we want to make our citizens aware of that.”

The department posted to their Facebook page earlier this week, telling people to be cautious on who they allow to enter their home.

“Sometimes people pressure others. Solicitors are salesman, sometimes their fake salesmen, and they do a good job of persuading you to let them come into your house. They might be there to sell something legitimate, but there are also people that try to get inside your house to see what you have so they can plan out a opportunity to commit a crime.”

According to Nash, all solicitors are required to have a business license, so if you’re not sure if they truly are trying to sell something you can ask them to see it.

And if you are feeling unsafe or don’t want to speak to them… Nash says do not open the door.

“You call us, we’ll come out and try to talk to those individuals. We’ll talk to you see what’s going on.”

If you do call, you are asked to call the non-emergency dispatch line at 502-863-7820.
