From severe storms to snow squalls here in the Bluegrass
Severe storms exit as colder air rushes in
A powerful cold front is sweeping across the Bluegrass region early Monday morning. Severe storms exited early on, leaving behind a few showers in far eastern Kentucky that will exit through the mid-morning.
Behind the front, conditions will change quickly as much colder air pours into Kentucky. Winds will remain strong, gusting between 25 and 35 mph as temperatures rapidly fall through the morning.
Snow showers and possible snow squalls
As the colder air settles in, moisture wrapping around the departing storm system will bring scattered snow showers to the Bluegrass. Some of these could briefly intensify into snow squalls.
Snow squalls can bring sudden bursts of heavy snow, strong winds, and sharply reduced visibility. While the ground remains relatively warm, brief accumulations are possible under heavier bands, with isolated areas potentially seeing up to around an inch.
Snow showers may continue through the day and gradually taper off during the evening as the storm system pulls farther away.
Temperatures will struggle to warm much, with afternoon highs only reaching the mid 30s. Combined with gusty winds, it will feel much colder and blustery across the region.
Bitter cold Monday night
The cold air will deepen Monday night as winds slowly begin to ease. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the mid to upper teens across much of the Bluegrass, with lower 20s possible across southern Kentucky.
Wind chills by Tuesday morning could drop into the single digits.
Gradual improvement through midweek
Cold conditions will continue on Tuesday as the upper-level trough moves away and skies gradually clear. High temperatures will remain chilly, only reaching the mid 30s.
A gradual warm-up begins Wednesday as high pressure shifts east and southerly winds return. A weak system may pass through the Ohio Valley during the morning, bringing a slight chance of light rain or snow showers, mainly across northern parts of the region.
Warmer weather returns late week
Temperatures will steadily rebound through the second half of the week, climbing back into the 60s by the end of the week.
Overall, the pattern turns quieter with mainly dry conditions expected, though small disturbances moving through the northwest flow could occasionally bring a brief chance for light rain.
