Friday marks 15 years since Lexington plane crashed

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Friday marks a somber anniversary in Lexington when a plane crashed at Blue Grass Airport, killing 49 people on-board, except a flight crew member.

Mayor Linda Gorton shared a tribute on social media. It reads in part, “15 years ago today, 50 people boarded Comair Flight 5191 intending to land in Atlanta. Sadly, the flight crashed at the airport, killing all passengers, and two of the flight crew. There was one flight crew survivor.”

According to Mayor Gorton, a memorial was created to remember those lives lost at The Arboretum, State Botanical Garden of Kentucky. The sculpture is made up of 49 birds to honor each life lost, as well as friends and family left behind.

Comair Flight 5191 crashed after the pilot accidentally taxied to the secondary runway which was much too short. The plane barely got off the ground before it crashed.
